Stick Coil Mod - a how too , I hope !
Most of you will most likely use or have used ZX10/6-R stick coils but the install is still the same as this.
I have used CBR600RR 07~09 Stick coils , part number 30700-MEE-641
These are a perfect fit into the spark plug chamber ,I applied a small smear of silicone grease onto the sealing "O" rings at the top of them and gave them a gentle twisting action to get them to fully seat.
The stick coils have a special water proof connector - you could buy the separate spades to make up your own loom but personally I recommend you source the original parts for the coils your using. So with that in mind i bought a new sub loom , part number 32103-MFJ-D00
Now take your perfectly good loom and strip all the insulation off and on mine I needed to chop this block connector off too
With the loom exposed you need to then wire them up like this diagram , this loom also had additional patch leads on it which I removed
With the new loom made and spade connectors attached for plugging into your bikes loom I recommend you do the install next before you seal it up with insulation and / or armour. That way you can ensure the leads are long enough and it actually works. When I made mine up I thought the leads for the 1 & 4 were too short so I extended them but turns out they would have been OK as is.
You can see i left the coils in place for the photo, I actually disconnected 1 & 4 first and fired the bike up running just two stick coils fitted. Then put in the other two and plugged them in and fired it up again - everything was perfect.
This photo shows you how the leads run into number two coil and it bridges into number three with it doing a return back into the Red on the main loom.
Everything running right , remove the coils and suddenly you've got oodles of space - time to get my F3 ram box hunted out !
Buttoned everything back up and took it for a spin, initial report:
Effortless starting
Crisp throttle response
Very smooth in traffic running
stable tick over
From what I have read (this was on a fully tuned engine) overall power is up - the curve followed the original a ball hair higher with a 1 BHP gain on the top. Another apparent benefit is better MPG too.
Mod Time:
Making the loom around 40mins
Installing the coils and plugging them in 5 mins
Very nice mod and has to be one of the simplest and quickest I've ever done.
MM!

Re: Stick Coil Mod - a how too , I hope !
Got my coils from a breaker so were about £25 for the 4 delivered - they are £26.45 each here new so that's a tidy mark up on them in the UK and the loom was a wee bit more at £27 so that's a fookin price on that ! Unless your talking Kwak parts ?SOILZX wrote:Fook me, these bits aren't cheep!! £65.17 each for the coil sticks and £85.30 for the loom

Ye, getting pins from probolt, there £16 a pair list price, but it just so happens that a friend has a trade account with them, so he gets a nice discount (M8 caliper mounting bolts in titanium were £20 for 4, think list price was about £35 for the 4)

Re: Stick Coil Mod - a how too , I hope !
There a good selection on stick coils on ebay..................but what will fit...................clearly CBR600RR ones will but what others ?
I've found some ZX6J ones for £37 delivered.......................but will they do the job ?. I know they have a different part number from ZX6RR ones..................been digging throught parts microfiches
I will try the ZX6RR ones from my ZX6 and see if they fit..................
