valves
morning guys, do you racers recommend check/adjusting valve clearances at 21000 miles if it hasnt been done yet??? also i havnt had the engine apart yet but i cant find the buckets and shims on a diagram of the valves????????????????????? cheers. merry xmas.

Thats because there aren't any
ZXR400s have rockers that operate the valves.
And yes you need to have checked the clearances......................

haha. so i guess from previoes experiance you just adjust with a screwdriver.

nope, no screwdriver and locknut, you need to adjust the shims. Its a case of measuring the clearance, then the shim, and then working out how much larger or smaller the new shim has to be. Some can be set by swapping shims from the other valves.

Measure the gap between the shim and rocker face..the clearance sizes are in the manual, I think it's 15 for inlet and 20 for exhaust...
You can slide the rocker to one side and lift out the shims with a small magnet, be extremely careful not to lose one down an oil channel or get it stuck behind a spring..
The sizes are normally marked on the shim or you can measure with a micrometer or calipers
i.e 2.85mm,2.9mm,2.95mm,3.0mm etc
They can be quite pricey.. Kawasaki about £6 each or Wemoto £3.50 each
