Alternative / Lighter wheels

There seems to be more and more members appearing that are racing the ZXR400 so i've created a special section just for you to show off results, discuss meets etc etc.

I've got ZX6r wheels on my bike too. The 180 rear Pirelli was only slightly taller than the 160, I think I took a half a turn of ride height out of my shock. The overall weight is less than the stock wheel with the 160 too.

are there any discs that will fit onto an 06 zx636 front wheel but still be 310mm for the zxr400 calipers? zx12 disc seem to be either 300mm or 320mm and the zx6 are 300mm, if i used the smaller discs would i lose out on braking?

if you use the smaller disc there's a risk that once the pads wear, they'll touch over the edge of the disc when braking, at which point they won't work. not good
I do 700 miles a week in all weathers including snow, that's roughly 35,000 miles a year, and some weekend warrior biker has the nerve to get out of his Audi at work to tell me to I was riding far too fast in the wet (over taking at 50... fast eh?).

For the discs I grabbed a couple of sets of zx12 rotors. For non wave type I mounted zx9c discs on zx6r carriers (same button pattern).
Got hold of a set of scales today & weighed my wheels,

Front zx6 y spoke with tire & disks 11.55kg (part worn Metzler K1 120/70)
Rear zx6 y spoke with tire & disk 12.8kg (new Metzler K1 180/55)
Front zx6 y spoke with wet & wave rotors 11.13kg (bridgestone wet)
Rear zx6 y spoke with 160 wet & wave rotor 12.12 (bridgestone wet)

Front old 3 spoke zx6 wet & disks 11.76kg (bridgestone wet)
Rear 400l with wet & disks 13.55kg (bridgestone wet)

Rear y spoke zx6 rim only 5.76kg
Rear H rim only 7.03kg

New Metzler 4.12kg 120/70
Worn Metzler 3.97kg 120/70
Worn Metzler 5.85kg 180/55

For comparison
Front 5 spoke magnesium marchesini with 320 brembo cast rotors 5.92kg

When I get a chance I will weigh some bare rims to be exact.
L 3 spoke from memory feels heavier than zx6 three spoke but at a guess would say a late model front zx6 is 0.6kg lighter & rear is 1.2 kg lighter
I was supprised that a worn front tire would lose 120g in rubber.

New spacers, I used a lightweight ZXR400 rotor and the stock brake setup. Here's the link to photos, viewtopic.php?f=37&t=12449

Just finishing my install of a H2 swing arm and ER6 wheels to my H1 race bike
https://picasaweb.google.com/1017306200 ... 4204983554
Tend to race as a one man band so as many endurance racing timesavers as possible have been incorporated.

Image
Rear caliper from a Yamaha moped, mount is captive on the arm (grubscrews on the underside) - if I was doing it again, I'd leave the caliper underslung, the 45deg and captive caliper means I can slide the wheel as far forward as I'd like to un-hook the chain from the spocket. Ledges either side and captinve spacers mean the wheel will stay in place with the spindle removed. Will be making a piece to fix the spindle to the RH adjuster block so there's one less thing to fall off. Added plastic ramps to the front paddock stand this weekend to support the wheel via the disks but forgot to take any photos.

3. Wheels:
Wheels must remain as originally produced by the manufacturer for the homologated machine except for the following:
Wheel bearings and spacers may be modified or changed where required. The speedometer drive may be removed and replaced with a spacer. The refinishing of wheel rims to a suitable standard is acceptable. 18” Rear wheel may be replaced with a suitable 17” rear wheel from the same manufacturer Front and rear wheel axles must remain as originally produced by the manufacturer for the homologated machine. Modifications can be made in order to accept safety retention devices

As long as on-one looks at the last few championship winners.........some funny wheels, funny forks, and some other bits. Not fond of the way those rules were written anyway. Someone needs to check whats involved in homologation before popping it into a rule book........ :smt018

Anyway - its a safety mod - my old wheels could have been cracked and aren't available new anymore? :smt002

Noel B.

For sale - two sets of H model wheels and front disks.............
