crank seal? i think..

Post by JoeZXR »

decided too refurb my alterntaor/stator cover but taking it off i found a small puddle of oil poured out, so im guessing a seal has gone slightly, is this a common thing that need maintaining or do the seals last a while?

as far as i know behind the stator there should be a crank shaft seal sat on the crank, pushed into the casing? just wonder what size these seals are? i cant seem to find anything anywhere for "kawasaki zxr 400 crank shaft seals" and i dont dare think what kawasaki would charge me directly so id rather get the measurement and buy my own cheap from a seal specialist place i know :smt003 also i dont have to split the engine do i, just pope out with a screw driver and tap the new one in evenly?

would be very appreciated if anyone knows the specific size or has one lying around they can check for me! thanks!

there should always be some oil inside the alternator housing, thats why there is the seal between it and the engine casing...as long as there wasnt loads and loads of oil in there then there should be no problem ~:D

that doesnt make sense haha if theres a seal then why would oil be in there? no it didnt gush out just poured out slowly so there was only a puddle in there but as far as i know it should be dry? majority of bikes iv looked at have never had oil in there :O

the manual does say to put a pan under the alternator housing to catch oil though...i also think it helps to lubricate the flywheel and starter clutch/gears?

All perfectly normal to have oil in there that's why there is an oil gaske for the case that comes off ;-)[googlevid][/googlevid]
