Non starter
Having finally managed to remove the remains of a spark plug from the engine, I was having problems getting my new engine to start and subsequently the battery went dead. I thought it might be a good idea to jusmp the bke from my car which was working really well for a while but still the engne didnt want to fire up!! Then all of a sudden, it seemed that the battery stopped taking the charge from the car to which I thought had smoked the batttery. I went to get another batttery which was fully charged and putthis on but it has made no difference, does anyone now know the problem?? I have been told that it could be the rectifier or regulator and does anyone have one for sale at all please??!!! Thanks

'Then all of a sudden, it seemed that the battery stopped taking the charge then what? Did the bike stop turning over?
Might be that you burnt out the starter motor.

Starter relay possibly?
Theres a test you can do on it thats in the manual so might be worth checking it. Theres also tests for the starter motor also.

Are you using the carbs that were on the previous engine? Just a thought....

Re: Non starter
ok so that eliminates them right away!
Are you using the same starter motor too? or did the new engine come with one? If its not the carbs or the starter motor i think you may be looking at something electrical. As to weather its the reg/rect or not i dont know, i wouldnt have thought so because it simply charges the battery, and if your jumping off a car battery which has its own charging system it wouldnt make any difference anyway.
And as dan said, check for a spark and fuel also.

Re: Non starter
have you checked the earth strap from the battery isn't corroded?
Don't forget people there is more to the zxr400 than this forum... check out www.zxrworld.co.uk also.

Re: Non starter
I have checked for fuel and there is fuel going in as if nothing else you can definately smell it. When I was turning it over before the problem I've got now, you could here it sparking as it sounded like it was going to fire up but then the problem with the battery came up. To be honest, I haven't checked for corrosion on the earth lead but then I cannot see a reason as to why the not having a spark would cause problems with the battery not turning the engine over anymore. It does have its own starter motor as it came with the engine so I might change that before I do anything else, maybe I have burn't that out.

Re: Non starter
Hi everyone, me again. Right thanks to RedexRob, I have fixed the latest problem by changing the starter motor, we now have the engine turning over again but refuses to fire up and I have flattened the bloody battery again. I have checked the spark plugs and I have a spark, there must be fuel getting into the chambers because occasionally I get a backfire(is it usual to get a backfire from the top of the engine by the way?). There is fuel in the tank as well and its fresh.......I'm now out of ideas again. It does turn over and it does sound like it is going to start but never quite does. Do you think that it simply is because the engine has not been running since August 2006.

Re: Non starter
Glad you got it sorted!
when you say a backfire through the top of the engine do you mean through the carbs? What about bump starting it? I find warming the plugs up on the oven flame helps starting, also allows the fuel in the cyclinders to evaporate while you do it if its slightly flooded. How strong is the spark and are they gapped properly?

Hi mate, yeah the spark plugs are virtually brand new, only done a few miles on them. Sad thing is Rob, we cook electric so dont have naked flames at home, lol!!! I have tried bumping it but I cant get it into 2nd gear but I think it is just a trate of the ZXR isn't it??!!

Re: Non starter
It should go into 2nd you just need to get it rolling quick enough!
Mind you if its been sitting for a long time the bearing might be a bit reluctant to move maybe.
What about a blow torch? Electric hob should do it, just might need to leave them to sit on it for a while.
