Hey guys and gals,
My friend has a ZXR 400 and it is refusing to start, it was started and used a week ago (at which point all was well) and now will turn over but not fire up and will not go into gear to bump start. He has had starting problems in the past due to a drain on the battery but this time it doesn't appear to be that which is causing it...
any ideas out there?

It should go in first unless something is wrong with the gearbox. You won't get it into second unless the bike is moving, the gearbox has a mechanism in it to help you get into neutral easier from first when you are stood - it prevents you clicking too far into second.
These bikes are very fussy about the battery charge. Even with enough to spin the motor they will often not fire up if the battery is not fully charged. Charge the battery overnight and try again. there's a few threads on here you can search for about what sort of voltage you should be looking for if fully charged. IIRC it is way above 12, more like 13.5V etc.
