removing oil cooler?

Post by R P Corse »

seen this somewhere before but cant seem to find it on here!

Couple of questions as im intrigued.

1. What are the benefits of removing the cooler?

2. Is it useful to have? I only see it as extra weight and something else to go wrong.

3. Can i get plugs made up to block the holes and if so..where?

Thanks guys.

You have answered question one for yourself in question two

so far as I'm concerned on my race bikes it is NOT useful to have

Any engineering firm will make you a plug or plate to blank off the holes...............I made my own from a bit of 8mm thick ally plate

I'd suggest that for normal road use it's not worth the effort involved in removing it and prob does help with increasing oil life by cooling it...............on a race bike the oil is changed a lot more frequently and so I consider it surplus

thanks for the quick reply

I was thinking about it all today and to be fair, i keep on top of servicing, so i don't mind sacrificing oil life. Also i ride in all conditions, so may be useful for the winter time if it means engine keeps heat instead of losing it through a cooler! Though thats my opinion.

Any chance of dimensions for the plug that you made mate?

I didn't make a plug..just cut a bit of flat plate to size and drilled holes to line up on sump. Then I cut a gasket to size from some gasket paper.

This may sound like a stupid question but does blanking off the oil cooler effect how the oil gets around the engine ?

By no means its a great question..................and the answer will allow you to educate yourself.

There is a rather lovely oil flow guide/diagram in the manual..................go read it and learn.
