Bolt on Exhaust Problem

Post by swindo221991 »

Hi guys,

Just bought a new slip on/ bolt on can for my bike.

I was under the impression that it would be a straight swap, however this wasnt the case.

They both have 3 bolts, but the new one measures around 95mm between (centre to centre) bolts, and the current one I have on there is around 70mm?

Is there anything that i can do about this so that the new one will fit? I assume there must be an adaptor for this problem?

Cheers,

Pete.

If you've just bought a new can for a ZXR400 and it doesnt fit then clearly the can is NOT for a ZXR400

Send it back and ask for the right one

It didnt say that it specifically fitted a zxr 400. Its an after market one tho and not an original can.

All it said was it had 3 bolts (and due to my stupidity) I thought would just be a simple conversion but it wasnt as the bolt holes are miles out!

Total pain in the butt really, but would quite like to use it so is there anyway around it?

I'd be very surprised if anyone made an adapter to make the can fit..............why would anyone do that when it's just a matter of buying the right can.

I'm certain a good machine shop could make you something to make it fit but the price would be high I'm sure.

You might be able to take your orginal can apart and and take your new can apart and fit the bolt on end fromthe old can to the new.

Or buy an old scruffy damaged can and remove the bolt fitting from that and refit it to your new can

Or buy a set of down pipes that have the correct end to fit your new can and cut the end off then cut the end off your current down pipes and weld the new end on

or maybe just buy the right can in the first place if it is new and from a shop they will refund you or maybe even they will have the right can.

Oh and welcome to the forum

I thought the internal gubbins of a can was designed for a particular engine. So if you fit a can designed for another bike to a ZXR400 aren't you going to introduce a whole host of other problems - flat spots and stuff like that?

most race cans are just straight through............the only variables are length and bore ?

Drill holes in the flange plate on link pipe where needed.

Had a shotgun exit can for a while , sold it to a fella in Spain - he was well pleased with it.

I have found this can that has the correct bolt hole distance but the formation is wrong. Is it possible to roate the flange to the desired formation and then re-rivet it?
