Why the holes in the rear fairings?

bought this fairing cheap off ebay, in excellent condition so i can put it on the bike when i come to sell it as it will be original bodywork. Anyway when i got it i noticed this hole?



i thought at first it could have been done by a previous owner but when i looked the paint actually is inside suggesting it was done at the factory



i have also seen this on some other bikes. So whats the deal? is it used for the grab rail/spoiler to go through? Thanks
