NO eletric >< stupid bike

Post by WelshD1K »

Out for a spin . done 40 miles ish .

stop for a rest have a piss etc . get back on bike starts fine.

ride 5-6 miles. had a dabble with soem tool in a golf. as i slow down for a junction cough cough blegh. go to turn it over DEAD!

BTw brand new battery before christmass. was charged last week.

then i realised a black / yellow wire lookign alittle loose. so i pulled it off and it wouldnt even try to spin then. put it back on same ....

got a nice person pull over give me a jump start 40 mins latter.

i cant work out WTf is wrong.

rectifier???? as this was BOILING hot.

then as i indicate to pull onto my road it starts to splutter from lack of eletricity ??? turn inditactors of and walla fne. pull over after 10 miles ish and still nocharge ><

ok questions :
what V should the battery have when just on the bike

what V should be going across it when its running / charging?

andy any hits would be nice

i had that exact problem when i had my gs500 and that was the rectifier/regulator.

you should have at least 12.3v when its just sitting and sumwere on 13v (or anything over 12 really) when its running if the alternator is runnin properly.

but i think if the rectifier/regulator is pumped then you mite not get these readings and its cheaper to change that than it is to change the alternator so better of checking that first.

the rectifier is too hot to touch after a good hard run . is this normal ??

by hard i mean 0-100mph propper open throttle.... and holding it
@ 90+ for 1-2 mins

On the ZXR i think the charging voltage is just over 14V, get a multimeter on there and find out. It does sound like a charging problem for sure. I had this on an XJR 400 i used to have, switched the indicators on and the bike stopped and started with the indicator. Turned out to be a dodgy wire, but in your case it does sound like the rec/reg has had it especially as its getting so hot. Mine has never been that hot.

dont confuse the battery voltage with the charging voltage, the battery alone will be about 12V. When it on the bike connect the meter up and then start the bike and hold the revs at about 4K, you should then see 14-14.5 volts acoross the battery, any higher or lower then something is wrong.

What battery charger are you using ?

Did you allow the battery to be completely flat like under 10V

flat enought not to be able to make indicators flash + charger a 12v one we use on landrovers soem clarke thign that auto varies voltages

Sounds like that is a heavy duty charger for large batteries it will destroy you ZXR battery the plates will warp.
Also if your battery was in deep discharge it will have sulphated the plates. The only way to even try and recover a ZXR 400 battery from deep discharge and sulphated plate is with a very very slow gentle recharge using something like an Optimate even then it's unlikely to recover the battery.

It is possible that you rectifier/regulater is faulty and either over or under charging you battery................if it is over charging the plates in the battery will warp and the battery is toast......................if it is under charging your battery will eventually discharge and your bike will not run. A fresh undamaged fully charged battery can last 200 miles of running but using the lights, indicators and starter motor will reduce the distance/time.
Given that you battery seems to have gone flat while riding it I'd suspect you rectifier/regulator but as you seem to have charged it with a very heavy duty charger it could just be that the battery is destroyed...............................or it could be both the battery and the rectifier/regulator

And yes it is normal for the rectifier/regulator to get hot..............it changes a high volatage AC current to a low voltage DC current all that surplus energy is disapated as heat that is why the rectifier/regulator has cooling fins

Here endth the lesson

yes thats fine 13.14V right after a charge is ok ...................................let it sit for a couple of hours and test the voltage again it should only drop a little

ok left over night it has 12.58v on it with nothign running of it. drops to 12.36 with ignition + lights on (not running)

First time she starts it imediatly picks up slowly to around 13.16 with coke on and its wafers around that mark .

take it 7 miles down road. pullover with engine running check again. its still sitting at 13.1 ish. so ride another 5 miles (giving it a handfull in 3rd up a long hill) get to my grans pull over check it 12.46 . so kill engine check it, shows 12.52. so fire ti back up and then it starys around the 12.2-12.3 (so not charging ??). kill the engine for 5 mins. go back out to make my way home check it 12.52, start the engine then it picks up again to 13.1 ish . ride it 12 miles home (giving it beans) get home check . back down to 12.5 ish , turn the idle up so its idling at 3.5k and it picks up to 12.65 ish .

so when its warm it isnt chargign as much as when engine is cold no matter how much beans i give it .

rectifier?? dodgey altenator?

its only supposed to be at 14.4v at around 4000rpm. At idle it will be lower and will depend if you have lights etc on. With all lights and indy's on at idle mine only shows 12v-12.1v. turn it all off and its fine.

This is all with a new genny, reg/rect and battery. Problem i had turned out to be there was a short inside the junction box.

One thing you therefore might want to check is the junction box. If its pre l5 you only have four fuses after that is about seven. Anyway, with ignition on and all the fuses pulled out you can test either side of the fuse connections. You should get battery voltage one side and 0v (or as close to i.e. maybe 0.01v). When mine was kaput i had battery voltage one side and 0.7v the other. New junction box and its all fixed.
These things are sent to try us!!
