Zxr 400 regulator problems

Post by Crazybitch »

Hi guys. I have a Zxr 400 L1. The regulator packed up recently cooking the battery 🤬😡 I replaced it with a new 5 wire reg, the assumption being that the brown wire is just a sensing wire so not needed for connection to the new reg. However the 5 wire reg is not charging the battery😡🤬 am I missing something🤔🥴 do I need to join the brown wire to somewhere? Or have i got a dud new regulator? Thanks Carol

First things first, are you getting 45V ac from your stator across all 3 wires at 4k rpm with your lights on?

If yes have you confirmed that you have an intact ground wire from the new reg rec, and confirmed that the white wire is still connected to the +ve of the battery.

Have you tested the new reg rec on any other bike to ensure it is working?

You are correct with the brown wire. The original 6 wire reg rec needs 12v down the brown wire to "activate" the reg rec... A 5 wire will not need this. So that brown wire can just be capped off.

Any other electrical issues?
