ZXR400H No spark, yet power to coils ect

Post by MarkThompson88 »

hi all, new to forum and couldnt find a similar topic,

recently started putting a project zxr400h together (recieved in parts) and spent all day trying to get a spark...

Both coils have power and the resistance is correct, we've snipped the ends of the HT leads to refresh them, used WD40 to help the connectivity and yet still no spark, been over the bike to check for swtiches cutting the spark ect, could seem to find any other than obvious ones, clutch, side stand ect.

Ran out of ideas to try

Cheers, Mark #88

Yup dash works fine, the earths im aware of are bolted into the top of the engine near crank breather hose they seem like good connections(1 from loom and battery).
ive found the wiring diagram in colour on these forums so gunna study that and go over it again tomorrow for round 2 :smt017

Have you tried getting a spark from all 4 plugs?

double check the side stand and clutch switch.

There should also be an earth point by the rear shock if the L model, long as there's one on the motor that's the main thing. Is there continuity between the earth on the motor and the neg terminal on the battery?

only other thing I can think of is the coil connectors need swapping round from one coil to the other.

Actually. Swapping round will do nothing at all. Forget that.

Just thought,

Sidestand switch isnt the problem, if it was then the bike wouldn't crank.

Clutch switch - As long as the clutch lever was pulled in the bike should still crank and spark.

Even though the coils are getting power, are they shunting the power to where is needs to be?
pull the plug caps off the HT leads and test to see if you get any spark from the leads > frame.

This picture is another connector ive found hidden in clocks - 3 pin connector with black/yellow, brown and pink wires going to it (the pink wire goes into the junction box aswell and is not on the wiring daigrams so no clue what is it)

Image
Thats the CDI if any imformation about that can be given too aswell, other H model ones on ebay are usually red stickers?

Image
Thats the rogue cable - black/yellow...we've tried finding out what its for or what its meant to go to but no avail

Image
Unsure about the starter relay as it has 4 pins yet the connector only has 3 wires and connections going into it

Thanks for advice and help so far

Black and yellow is the earth lead. Damned if I can remember where that one goes, I remember it because of the connector.

Wouldnt worry about the plug coming out of the clocks, thats meant to plug in to the loom and is part of the restriction in the clocks. Didnt think a blue CDI worked on the H models, thats the UK spec CDI and derestricts the bike.

Ah ok sweet, we've come to the conclusion that the cdi might be at fault... Gunna wait untill i get my race bike back(L model) and try swapping them over to test if this one is faulty. The cdis on ebay i've seen with the red stickers are the standard ones? Do you suggest fitting one of them instead?
