Forks won't come apart

Post by UK II Kazawacky »

Right, I've got proper L1 forks and I've taken them apart but I can't get the inner tube to come out of the outer tube. Any ideas why? The springs and everything else is out but something seems to be stopping it
Thanks in advance, Nick

I had this a few weeks ago. Turns out the bushes were slipping behind the other bush. Locking everything in place. You could try forcing them apart, but u risk damaging the stantion.

I had to cut the outer sleeve to get the stantion out.

it turns out that the two copper bits inside the outer tube were stuck together, however I got it off eventually and am now in the process of putting new seals in! all is good
Thanks for the help

Yeah haha, I'm toad with mechanical terminology :smt005

Anyhoo, I eventually got it separated and replaced the seals, but I found out that the white plastic stuff that stops the actual spring wobbling around has snapped and been completely destroyed previously, therefore I've been told I will need a new fork. Now that's about £100 by my reckoning, and the chain and sprocket are on their way out, and the rear wheel needs pumping up every two weeks or so (slow puncture or damaged valve?). I only bought the bike for £720 and it's cost me about £5-600 in replacement parts so far, and I'm getting kinda low on the bank balance (and so is my dad :smt002 ).

1: Do I sell the bike I have and buy a better one that won't keep costing me £££'s to repair?
2: Do I break the bike and sell it for spares and buy a better one with the money I (might) get from the proceeds?
3: Or do I just keep going with this one and keep learning about how to repair bikes?

Let me know because I'm in two minds about buying this one (eBay Item No: 180494643873)

Cheers, Nick
