I've got a spare cyl head that I want to use to build a spare motor, however it didn't come with any cam caps. If I'm told correctly the cam caps are specific to each individual cyl head so does this make my cyl head worth scrap value? Or can I just source another set from elsewhere and use them?

machined for each head but more specifically the cams.... i have swapped number 2 cam cap for another but had them honed... people suggest against it but it does work.

Ideally you have the matching caps. As neil has mentioned they are individually machined so that the oil feed holes match up perfectly with each head. Using mismatched caps can not only starve the top end but can also crack the cam cap. Id be surprised if you can find a spare set of caps tho since they are meant to be individual to each head.

Good point that, I might take a spare set of caps I had from a joblot and get the local engineer to try and get them to fit properly.RedexRobB wrote:Id be surprised if you can find a spare set of caps tho since they are meant to be individual to each head.

You will have to get the cam journals line bored to ensure that there are no tight spots on the cam journals (similar to a close & hone on big ends). Oil feed is through dowls so oil supply should be ok but correct journal clearances for oil film in plain journals are essential.
