Engine gave up whilst riding hard - Urgent advice requested.

Post by Lee »

On the way to work early this morning after passing through a village i gave the bike a fistfull up through all the gears and when i got to full revs in 5th gear, the bike suddenly jerked and started running rough, almost like when you hit reserve and lose power (had almost a full tank), i immediatly began to slow down and got to about 50 mph before the engine cut out and the back wheel locked up and i was fighting to hang on whilst sliding all over the road. I pulled the clutch in but the wheel still stayed locked and i eventually came to a stop at the side of the road.
I tried to find neutral which was a lot harder than normal but got it eventually and attempted to start the bike again, and after almost flattening the battery it turned over, but very lumpy like the timing is out. The wierd thing is that it will tick over with the clutch pulled in but as soon as its let out the engine stalls, even in neutral.

My only thought is that with the high revs close to the limiter, the cam chain has managed to jump a tooth and knock the timing out but i don't know what else is going on with the clutch / gearbox. I have a spare engine with a knackered head and piston but the clutch and gearbox is fine so i may be able to combine the two bad engines together to make a good one (if the valves aren't fu*ked on the current engine) once i find out for sure what the problem is.

Does anybody have any ideas or advice on the problem? Im urgently needing to get it back running as its my only mode of transport at the moment.

Thanks for reading. Lee.

um .. sounds fairly terminal im afraid ..

strip it down and see what's bent is the only advice i can give really .. i wouldnt have thought the camchain has jumped, its held too close to the sprockets for that to be easily possible, and dying once in gear does indicate a gearbox issue .. but rough running could well be a knackered valve ..

my 600 would tick over (just) after it smacked up 4 valves and ate a piston, just sounded awful.

No the engine wasn't cold, i had been riding for a good 10 minutes before it happened.

I fear that this may be the case too but this dosen't explain why it locked up and wouldn't disengage drive with the clutch pulled in :smt017
