Running temps without oil cooler

Post by Si81 »

So my L9 had an oil leak on a pretty badly corroded oil cooler. So, after doing some research on here decided to remove it altogether and use the longer hose to join up the inlet and outlet which worked quite nicely.

I've literally just fired up the bike in the back garden for 5, maybe 6 minutes and the temp guage started to rise quicker than it had previously, which i guess you'd expect with the cooler removed, i shut it down as I don't want to cook the engine just idling in the garden. I let the guage rise to just under the mid-way point.

But I just wondered what should the engine temp be on the guage? Should it be hitting the mid - point and staying there is it acceptable for it to climb higher to say 2/3 or even nearer the top end of the guage?

Would it be a good idea to drain the coolant and put in some 'engine ice' type coolant? It is going to be used on the roads but it is purely for sunday afternoon fun on the country lanes, not sitting in commuter traffic.
