So the head may have gone due to a fecked cam carrier bolt I believe.
A friend was saying that a L model engine will drop right in a H model frame, so that leads one to believe they have the same mounts. What else is the same? And would I need the L model CDI and Carbs?

l model loom, cdi, fusebox should be all you need if you are getting a complete L engine, remember that the wiring to the fuseboxes is different from L5 onwards, so if getting a new loom and fusebox make sure they are compatible.
its possible to make the connections yourself and use a L4 loom with a L5 fusebox, but its more work.

Re: zxr400 engine similarities between H and L models
Hmm okay, I'm going to view some parts this weekend for a 1999 model which leads me to believe it's a L9 model)(will ask the fella to conform) So in order to successfully transplante the engines I need the loom, cdi and fuse box from ideally the same age bike.
What about exhausts? The bike I bought came with another set of H downpipes so that and my H carbs will just bolt on without an issue.

I've also been offered a L model head for a fair price (L9 I think)
Could I get away with using these on my H barrels? Someone has previously mentioned they are matched to my head but my local machinist (Steve(top bloke) at Piston Broke) said he'd be able to sort it out so I could use an alternative head, providing they actually fit.

dont need to change anything ..
as long as the ignition rotor is the same as your current one and the thermostat housing points the right way (spin it 180 if it doesnt) it'll bolt in and work with your existing plumbing/carbs/loom/cdi/exhaust etc ..
swapping heads is fine .. just check piston/valve clearance
cams have to match the crank (something to do with the tooth pitch changing)
Say hi to steve for me.. He is a great guy with a fantastic business name !

Re: zxr400 engine similarities between H and L models
Zimm thanks that's what I needed to hear!
I believe mine has a leaking base gasket too so I guess I'll have to whip that off while I replace my head..
You say cams need to match the crank, so I'll have to have both L crank and cam or both H. Would I be able to put my H cams in my L head?
I think I'll end up buying the fellas engine off of him and the head so I have a few spares too... Supposed to be riding this to Spain in a few weeks so I need it in shape!
Will do, he's a wise bloke. Took my kh125 up there and he fixed up my bore nicely (something something over revving blew up the piston wasn't me..)
