gearbox broken up , new engine needed ?

broke down the other week , drained oil out and had a fair amount of metal in the oil , droped off the oil pan and found more metal and one gear hanging off the shaft pretty much, do i risk replacing just the gearbox or is better to just change the engine and gearbox ? need to find a engine ! ebay has nothing atm !
