My engine is running quite poorly to say the least, it idles quite rough and regularly switches between 1.5k and 2k at idle. it doesnt pull like it used to through the revs, there is still a chunk of power up top but noticably less than it used to have. And you can just hear out the exhaust its running like toad.
I plan to drop the engine out and have it 'serviced'. I did the HG last year with no issues but in the interest of time and a professional job i will leave this to a mechanic. i was planning on dopping the engine off at my local garage with a new set of gaskets and letting him crack on.
whilst it was there i'd strip and clean the carbs, once all back together i'd get same garage to get it set up on dyno
its a H1 that i've done 5000+ miles on, is this the best thing to do........

Re: Engine Refresh
What exactly are you going to get the mechanic to do?
Could just need a carb balance, new plugs, air filter n a valve clearance check/adjust. That should pretty much smooth the engine right out.

Re: Engine Refresh
well i dont know to be honest, i thought there was just a general service procedure for an engine? aside from just the oil and filter. But if a valve clearance check/adjust is all that that would be done then thats all i'll have done. my airbox rubbers are pretty messed up so they would be getting replaced along with the air filter anyways.
If that plus filters and a carb balance could sort this out thats fine, but if there is anything else on the engine worth him doing that will save me a headache in the future i'd rather get it all done now

Re: Engine Refresh
Theres a service schedule in the manual, that will be more specific depending on the mikeage. If your carb rubbers are shot then that will explain alot about why it runs bad.Chris R wrote: i thought there was just a general service procedure for an engine?

Re: Engine Refresh
The best I can find in the manual is that valve clearance should be checked every 5,000 miles so It is well due on that part.
This will be done with the engine in the frame? I am happy to replace parts that aren't 100%, airbox rubbers into the carbs, new air filter and a carb strip down and clean. Get the mechanic to check valve clearances, balance carbs and set up on dyno.
I know it won't be cheap anyone know a rough price for any of the work there?
