rattle and odd exshaust fume

Post by Miles »

Hello, after rebuilding engine have now started having that dreaded cam-chain rattle. Just as you hit 4k on the rev's. Have done the shims so must be the tensior. Just wondering can I just reset the tensior or should I just bite the bullet and buy a new chain and tensior?

Also, When I pull back on the throttle the fumes from the exshaust die away, yet return under idle. When my hand is put next to the end of the can and I pull the throttle I can feel a slight sucking motion from the can. Is this nornmal? Only noticed as on my friends vfr when he pulls the throttle exshaust fumes come out under high pressure as I would image

Please someone tell me i'm being silly and making this up in my head vsad

Depends if your chain has enought room to be tightend maybe you shpould see what its like whether to get a new one or to tighten it, and nope that exhaust fumes doesnt sound right. Maybe your valves?

yes I thought valves as well but all the compression is within range. it's almost as if the timing is out 180'. But can't be or else it wouldn't run???

The tensionervis automatic on the zxr. So once the chain rattles its either worn or the tension blade is. You could try resetting the tensioner but no guarantee itll work. Either case its engine out and you may as well do both while ur at it.

Looks like it's cam-chain time. Cargo has kindly offered his services to help do this. I plan to take a detailed guide with photos and post it up for people the next time they have to do theirs.

Will be in touch
