Tom, tensioner looks ok to me, and I have a new cam chain waiting to go in.Tensioner looks
to be close to it's limit of travel.
Didn't consider changing the tensioner at the same time as the chain. hmm.
In two minds whether i've got the skills to change the cam chain myself, and presently
don't have the cash to throw at a garage to change it at £45 an hour.
Had the rocker cover off to have a look, with the engine in situ, and thought better of
it, and again doubt my abilities to get the engine out too.

Checked the cables and they all look free an easy. The problem does remind me of when
I first got the bike, and found the throttle return cable was broken. Replacement cable
in, and it was fine, but it's doing something similar, with all the cables ok.
When you say mixture screw, is that the pilot screw they mention i the manual?
Looks like it's in a bugger of a place to get at.
