Draining the carbs

Post by CaNsA »

Seeing as the "twins" are gonna be stored in the "office" for a few months, and the smell of petrol is overwhelming, i have heard that it would be a good idea to drain the carbs.
I have no idea how to do this, or where to start.

Could some clever person post some pics and a short guide showing how to do this on a ZXR400 L please.

Cheers

Yeah thats one way of doing it, switch the fuel tap to off and run the engine till it stops. The other way is to use the float drain screws. Once you have the tank off you will see the carbs, underneath there are 4 allen key screws (which stick out pointing to the right) with a short downward pointing spigot right next to them. Simply unscrew these and every last drop will drain out. You can use a length of pipe to put over the spigot to drain it into a petrol can if needs be.

Pic below shows the float bowl (only carb with one on) with the screw on top pointing to the right and the spigot pointing up. Carbs are upside down int he pic by the way.

cant see how this can be screwed up but there is a fair chance that petrol (if you are doing it in the house) will end up on the floor at some point if you are draining the float bowls. This is only an issue if

1) her indoors is at home :smt018
2) you are doing it with the bike stood on her best rug/carpet :smt003

It might make more sense to do this outside and then roll them back in - taking the tank off couldnt be easier - just watch as you lift it that you ease the fuel tap out of the frame slowly otherwise the frame has a nasty habit of turning the tap back on (with the hose removed of course) and turning your trainers into something that wont go down well at the local gym!!

Actually check out my guide on carb balancing, that covers taking the tank off.

http://www.zxrworld.co.uk/zxr400/workshop.html

Its alot easier to take the tap off first then remove the tank, no akward manouvering. Theres nothing you can really screw up other than spilling fuel which is best avoided by turning the fuel tap off and running the engine for a minute, that way when it comes to taking the fuel pipe off it wont be flicking about everywhere.

And as Dave said, best done outside, you will only end up having the house smell like a petrol station and having funny dreams.
