Basically I have had my zxr since Jan 09 and have done quite a few miles on it since then. I bought it from a registerd Kawasaki dealer who said that it had done 12000km approx, as it was an import it was in km. Fair enough, that’s fine with me.
After a while of having my bike I read somewhere that zxr imports lights come on automatically however mine has a switch. Could be they have been modified, no biggie.
I then became suspicious that the km was a bit long & mile like so on my way to Bournemouth yesterday I asked a friend to see how many miles the trip was. My odometer was the same as his after the trip (his being in miles also). So after buying a bike that I thought had done about 7500miles could have done about 5000 more by this point. I am not all that happy about it to be honest as one of his selling points was that the mileage was extremely low however it’s actually done a lot more miles then I thought.
Has anyone else had a problem with a dealer before? Just wondering what the best course of action is from now as I feel like I’ve been mugged off a little.
Also is there any other checks to make that the bike is a UK or import?

Re: km turned out to be miles
i think if you look at the cdi you can tell if its an import of not
im sure someone on here will tell u what you are looking for,
basically you have been mislead through false advertising, if you have proof of the dealer stating KM instead of miles then trading standards can step in
just go in kicking and screaming mentioning trading standards
try and get some money out of them, or free servicing at the very least

Re: km turned out to be miles
CDi is one way of checking, if its any other colour than blue then the CDi is from an imported bike, but isnt a sure fire way to say the bike is an import as they are interchangeable between L models.
The switch on the handle bar usually suggests its a UK bike, but im not sure if simple plugging in a UK switch gear would work.
What does the speedo look like? Does it go upto 160mph in white writing on the speedo, or 180kmh? It could be an import with a converter on the back of the clocks to compensate, in which case the mileage could be anything.
One last one i can think of is to check behind the clocks for a cable that plugs into the speedo.
And before you go to the dealer to have a pop, id be surprised if you can do much about it as most bikes are sold with no guarantee on the mileage as it could be anything on any 2nd hand bike.

If the clock is in miles then so is the odometer. Surley it doesn't take a genious to work that out.

Most places will explicitly state "This is not necessarily correct". If he's done the opposite and stated it is an accurate mileage (kilometrage?) then a) he's an idiot, and b) you've got a case.RedexRobB wrote: And before you go to the dealer to have a pop, id be surprised if you can do much about it as most bikes are sold with no guarantee on the mileage as it could be anything on any 2nd hand bike.
Of course proving that he's said that is another matter entirely.

Re: km turned out to be miles
and its his word against yours.
if it were me id just carry on riding the thing and be done with it, if you really feel like youve been done over id be asking myself how much less would the bike of cost with 5K miles more on the clock? And is it worth taking them to court for it?
I got done when i bought my XJR400 that was supposed to have been fully serviced, after a few months the front sprocket started slipping, got the cover off and it was practicallyrounded off. Rear sprocket was fairly ok. Unfortunately is was one large fk off nut and could i get the bugger undone without the chain slipping? Hell i could, managed it eventually but at the end of the day i was going to change the sprockets anyway so didnt really loose out, bike carried on for the next 4 years with only a few minor problems

Did you not get a slip when you bought it? Like proof of purchase or anything? Should have make & model - frame & engine numbers and also mileage. See what currency its in!

Yeh I got a slip with the bike and that’s in km. The clocks are km that have been converted to mph but wasn’t sure if that would make the odometer change to miles. Maybe it is something extremely simple I’m missing here but I thought it was worth asking. I might pop in and just tell him what has happened. I’ll give the CDI a check, its time I know where my bike was born & raised.

It should say on the V5, if its an import it's declared 'd' on the front page of the registration document. It should say when it was imported and declare the date of manufacture. Also is there any other checks to make that the bike is a UK or import?
Do you have any histroy with the bike MOT's etc to see the milage? failing that enter your details into the dvla page and it comes up with a (all be it rather limited) history of the bike etc
