preload adjustment pushes out 3 pins IIRC that touch and add to the compression on the top of the spring, so adding a spacer increases the preload, so a normal setting of "3 lines showing", might be similar to "5 lines showing" with the spacer...at least that is what i remember from when i disassembled mine...anyone else?
