Re: 3d printing....
the school I used to teach at had a 3D Printer - really impressive machines and surprisingly inexpensive now. You can get kit-build ones aimed at schools and modellers for less than £2000 nowadays that make parts by extruding ABS resin onto a moving platen.
Back in the day when I was in engineering we used to have prototype parts made using a laser stereolithograph - shoots three laser beams into a vat of resin and where the beams meet the resin sets. Very cool machines!

Re: 3d printing....
Year ago I saw the results of a 3D printer when my mate was working on the A380 airbus (or whatever - the BIG one!), but it certainly didn't have moving parts?! WTF?!
